Docking Impender

Project description: The Docking Impender project aims to mitigate destructive forces and bouncing effect during hard docking of two objects such as satellites or a transportation vehicle docking to a space station. The Docking Impender project is funded by the European Space Agency under a scope of the Startiger program. The SSBV Polska is a member of a consortium which work on Kinetic Energy Absorber system for docking of two objects in space.

Role: product assurance manager, system engineer, mechanical engineer.

Designed devices: CubeSat 1U Deployer for an air bearing test table (whole project), Kinetic Energy Absorber (theoretical analysis, feasibility study).

Other: mathematical model of the kinetic energy absorber.

Organization: Warsaw University of Technology

Project description: The PW-Sat was the first Polish satellite ever launched to orbit. It was a 1U CubeSat which was designed by students supported by professionals. The main aim was to perform a test of technologies developed by young professionals – the main was to deorbit a satellite using a drag augmentation device. It was launched on 13rd February 2012 on-board the Vega launch vehicle from Kourou in French Guiana.

Role: mechanical engineer, system engineer (from 2010), project manager (from 2010).

Designed devices: Non-friction hinges, carbon-fiber mechanical parts, Sail Release Mechanism, mechanical structure (it has been used in the flight model).

MURB Deorbitation System (MDS)

The MDS is a new concept of deorbitation system which could be applicable to rocket upper stages and small satellites which orbit on Low Earth Orbits. This project is in the phase 0 (based on the ESA’s standard – ECSS).

The main goal of MDS is to give for customers a cheap, easy to use and safety deorbitation system. It’s been awarded the 3rd prize during the 8th IAA conference on small satellites by the International  Academy of Astronautics. More details are available here.

Sail Release Mechanism (SRM)

The SRM is a new concept of release mechanism, which can be apply not only for Sail, but for every devices which needs a shutter. It’s been made of a carbon fibre and a new non-friction hinges.

Vacuum chamber

Organization: Warsaw University of Technology

Project description: The Vacuum Chamber project was aimed to train students in the field of vacuum chamber design and utilization. Students transformed an old tank into a vacuum chamber which riches vacuum on a level of 10-3 mbar. It was used to perform a test campaign of engineering models of components for the PW-Sat project.
